Philosophy of Pam Pedlow
"Don't let what you can't do interfere with what you can" (John Woode). This has been my philosophy, cognizant or not, for as long as I can remember.
As a child, I was always active, but never particularly good at anything. Of course way back then, sports or physical activity wasn't really the 'thing to do' for young females. My daily activity consisted of walking to and from school twice a day. My horizons broadened in grade 8, when I went snow skiing for the first time. I spent more time sliding on my butt than I did on my feet, but it didn't matter, I loved it! I saw what was possible and it inspired me to improve.
In early adulthood, Jim Fixx, and the running craze took hold. Running? How easy can that be! So off I went to run around the block. Lo and behold I barely made it half way before I collapsed. Somewhat disgruntled, I tucked my tail between my legs and skulked back home. I was only 23 years old, yet I was incapable of running more than two blocks. Not only did that inspire me to polish the dust off my shoes and start being more active year-round, it also was the urge I needed to go back to school. I wanted to learn more about the human body and exercise. Three years later, I graduated from The University of British Columbia with a degree in Human Kinetics (Exercise Science).
The better part of my undergrad study time was spent researching injuries and injury prevention. My goal upon graduation was to enter pre-med with the hopes of one day becoming a sports medicine physician. Those plans were put on the back burner when I got married. Five years later my first child, Nick, was born; five years after that along came my second child, Stephanie.
I spent the next 17 years working part-time in the fitness industry. It was during those years, working with clients of various backgrounds, that I came across a common denominator. People aren't active because they are harboring some long ago derived injury. That and a bout of plantar fasciitis, lead me back to UBC and a master's degree in Human Kinetics (sports medicine).
This brings me to today. My goals are to break the barriers induced by chronic injury, teach correct movement patterns and restore free movement in both adult and youth populations. I am particularly passionate about teaching the teenage population how to move correctly, so they are less likely susceptible to injury as they age. I'm determined to remove the word 'can't' from our vocabulary. Where there is the will, there should be a way, and I'd like to help you find it.
I build programs, which people can do, so eventually they will be able to do what they can't!
