Fort Frances Power Corporation to connect and serve FirstLight’s 57.2 MW Fort Frances Solar Project as a new industrial customer.

The 57.2 MW Fort Frances Solar Project by FirstLight will generate enough electricity to power about 8,000 Ontario households, while providing Fort Frances Power Corporation with an opportunity to support local economic development and expand its customer base.

FORT FRANCES — June 11, 2026 — FirstLight, a leading clean power producer, developer, and energy storage company, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) for the 57.2 MW Fort Frances Solar Project in partnership with Lac Des Mille Lacs First Nation.

This agreement supports the Ontario Government’s energy plan to meet the province’s growing electricity demand and positions the Town of Fort Frances as a clean energy export community. As a community-owned, customer-focused utility and a trusted partner in advancing economic development in Fort Frances, we are pleased to connect FirstLight as a new industrial customer on our planned 44 kV distribution system and expand our customer base, said Joerg Ruppenstein, President & CEO of Fort Frances Power Corporation (FFPC). The project marks an important step in modernizing FFPC’s aging transformer station and local electricity system and also creates an opportunity to work with FirstLight on developing and implementing the Town’s community-based microgrid initiative. We will continue working closely with FirstLight, Hydro One, the IESO, and the Ontario Energy Board on site design, supply capacity engineering, rate design, and connection requirements.

FirstLight’s investment in our community through the 57.2 MW Fort Frances Solar Project lays a strong foundation for economic growth in Fort Frances. The project will make a great contribution to local economic development, create jobs, and position FFPC as an important player in the province’s energy supply, said Fort Frances Mayor Andrew Hallikas.

This project is an exciting step forward for our community. It strengthens our position as a clean energy leader while helping attract new investment and position Fort Frances for long-term success. Through the continued evolution of Fort Frances Power Corporation, we are building a stronger, more vibrant community for the future, said Marcel Michaels, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the Town of Fort Frances.
